Gac, "Fruit from Heaven" has long been prized for its ability to promote longevity and vitality. It has been traditionally used as both food & medicine in south Asia. This super fruit contains astonishing nutritional content, including incredibly high concentrations of beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids. Science has demonstrated that lycopene, beta carotene, and other potent antioxidants found in gac fruit help provide strong vascular protection and cellular rejuvenation. More importantly, it reduces oxidative stress, a causative factor in many health concerns. Research is proving that gac contains concentrated amounts of a unique and highly bioavailable form of carotenoids that facilitate their absorption. A USDA research publication in 2003 states: “gac aril can produce more than 76 times the amount of lycopene found in commercial tomato. The total B-carotene in this fruit is also very high.” We are living longer, but no one wants to spend their years incapacitated by illness. It has been widely acknowledged that a major cause of aging is oxidation of cells and free radical damage of DNA. The result is oxidation, which is essentially the same thing that happens to metal when exposed to air, or the browning of fruit once the skin has been penetrated. Oxidative damage to DNA over time can cause changes to both the structure and function of chromosomes. These changes in the genetic code may lead to cancer and other chronic diseases. Our cells receive about 75,000 free radical hits to their DNA daily, contributing to the aging process. Additional stressors such as excessive sunlight, smoking, obesity, dieting, pollution, toxins, and general psychological or physiological stress can affect the way we look, and feel. The good news is that most of the damage is preventable. Adequate amounts of antioxidants are essential to protect individual cells from attack by free radicals, support cellular rejuvenation, support healthy immune function, and slow the common effects of aging through DNA protection.

| GAC & CANCER: An article in the 2005 International Journal of Oncology states that “…oil extract of Gac fruit was found to be effective in the treatment of liver cancer. In cancer research, it has been suggested that the bioactive components of Gac fruit are its antioxidants, which may have effects on cancers related to oxygen free radicals, such as liver, colon and breast cancer. However, other components may also have anticancer properties.”
“…this investigation clearly indicated that Gac fruit contains a protein of 35 kDa possessing direct antitumor and antiangiogenic effects against certain cancers. Gac fruit should be considered as a functional food and medicinal resource for the prevention and treatment of various diseases including cancer, diabetes retinopathy, and chronic inflammation. It is hoped that the results of this study will be used as scientific basic data for the further study and ultilization of Gac fruit in pharmaceutical and nutritional intervention.”
Results from a number of population studies show that people with high lycopene intake or high lycopene levels in the body are at a lower risk for developing certain types of cancers. Lycopene has been found to inhibit breast cancer tumors more efficiently.
Lycopene intake was inversely associated with risk for ovarian & cervical cancers.
Intake of dietary lycopene may also play a role in the prevention of prostate cancer. "An 83% reduction of prostate cancer risk was observed in the group with the highest plasma concentration of lycopene in comparison with individuals with the lowest concentration. The strength of the association was directly related to dose; with increasing concentrations of plasma lycopene, the risk of prostate cancer was decreased."

LYCOPENE & HEART DISEASE:
"Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of death in North America. Scientific evidence indicates that oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, which carry cholesterol into the blood stream, plays an important role in the development of atherosclerosis – the underlying disorder leading to heart attacks and ischemic strokes (1). Antioxidants are believed to slow the progression of atherosclerosis because of their ability to inhibit cell-damaging oxidation (2). " Recent studies indicate that consuming the antioxidant lycopene can reduce the risk of heart diseases."
In a study of participants from 10 European countries, it was found that consumption of lycopene in fruits and vegetables might reduce the likelihood of developing heart disease . Almost 1 million Americans unneccessarily die of cardiovascular diseases every year (40.6% of all deaths; No. 1 killer every year since 1900). Chronic inflammation has been implicated in degenerative diseases, including heart disease. Lycopene and other bioactive compounds have the ability to regulate immune signals; thus, reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease.

CAROTENES & CATARACT Data from the Nurses' Health Study, which tracked more than 50,000 female nurses for an average of nine years, indicate that the antioxidants vitamin A and carotene (a vitamin A precursor) can reduce the incidence of cataracts, vision impairment & blindness. It is beta-carotene that gives carrots both their color and their reputation for sharpening eyesight. Gac fruit boasts 16X more beta-carotene than carrots. |
